The Edith Nesbit Society

President: Dame Jacqueline Wilson, OBE

Edith Nesbit wanted to be known as a poet and at an early age, still in her teens, had a poem published. This gave her greater confidence to write more, both for adults and children, but it is for her children's books she is best known.

The Railway Children must be one of the most endearing children's books and echoes a little of Edith's life. There is an absent father, her own had died when she was four, so a father figure is often absent from her narrative. Mothers are often busy doing other things, looking after poorly relatives or writing to earn a living, whilst the children enjoy adventurous explorations.
